Music was playing loudly across the plaza to create a fun atmosphere. Students were sitting along the bench outside the theater playing games with their friends, others were playing volleyball in the plaza, and while other students lined up to get snacks, there were students lined up along the table shoving their faces full of watermelons. This was the scene in an event on September 9, after school. The StuCo students organized a fun end of summer social in the plaza where the buses wait for the students after school. This social was described as cool by Anika, a new student in 7th grade.

We at The Lantern, interviewed the winner of the watermelon eating contest, Adrian from 7th grade to get an idea of what competing was like: “For me, I would give it a solid nine out of ten.” When asked what ten would look like for him, Adrian expressed that the watermelon was a little dry and that he would want the watermelon to be a little juicier.

Next, we talked to Malinda, an 8th grade student, which part of planning the social was the hardest and she responded, “When planning the social, we had problems communicating for example, our service team since it was broken into languages and like organizing and making sure everything was here on time was the challenge.” Naomi also asked her what the easiest part of planning the social was, and she said that the easiest part of planning the social was just filling out the forms since the StuCo team had everything in mind from the student council meetings.

After interviewing Malinda, a StuCo member, Naomi interviewed Vedant, a StuCo member from 7th grade. She asked him what he would rate the event out of ten, “I would say like a seven because I think most people are enjoying, they found what they like, and the food’s not run out yet.” While this was a fun social, there are parts that can improve, “I think ten would be that there are more variety of activities for sure, and I think there should have been a more secure way to give out food.”

Although there is always room for improvement, everyone we interviewed mentioned that they had more fun than they expected. We are excited for what the StuCo comes up with next year!
