The Talk in Lake Ontario (A fictional story)

By: Jamie Chung

I stared at the Aircraft Safety Card as people panicked in silence around me. I was on a plane, stuck in the middle of the ocean 600 miles away from Toronto, Canada period. Maybe I am exaggerating since Washington D.C only 347 miles away from Toronto and we are actually not in the ocean we are in the middle of Lake Ontario 125 miles away from Harbor front.

Great, whoever checked this plane before the flight must have been a beginner trying to navigate how this huge plane works. My family and I live near Harbor front a huge shopping mall in the huge city Toronto. I am also an only child and people sometimes assume I want a sister or a brother but nope, I don’t feel that way at all, I like being on my own it makes me who I am today. Anyhow, you must be wondering why I am flying from Washington D.C to Toronto well that was one heck of a story. It all started out to be exciting news, parents had a 1-week vacation, so we went to Washington!

Washington is one of my parents’ all-time favorite places to go to. One Sunny day at the Dewey Beach, I was playing near the ocean wearing my black and blue swimsuit, with my honey blond hair tied in a ponytail, on the nearer side of the beach sat my parent’s. My Mom was wearing a silky tri-colored dress, she had her wavy brown hair tied up in a bun and her sun hat on with round white sunglasses. My dad had his plain blue beach pants on, a white T- shirt, and rimless black sunglasses. They both sat under a white beach umbrella drinking coconut smoothies, while they enjoyed the view. I love seeing my parents happy and relaxed it makes me feel relaxed, well that basically lasted about two seconds later when we got back to the hotel we were staying at, my dad checks his computer every day after dinner because he wants to make sure he doesn’t miss out on any important “emergency emails”. I used to think that was just him being over paranoid but, after this experience I have a change of opinion. So as soon as he opened his email a message popped in right in the middle of the screen, it was a message from the Embassy calling an important meeting back in Canada.

With that said we flew all the way back to Toronto. My mom and dad are diplomats, my dad is the Ambassador in Canada and my mom is in the Embassy with my dad. There are many goals of an Embassy or Consulate but the main 2 are to improve relationships between the two countries and the second is to help support their own citizens in that foreign country.

Diplomats can have different jobs depending on what needs to be done at a Consulate or Embassy, so we always have to move every 2 to 3 years because my parents work and do different things that help improve relationships with counts.

Neither did my mom or dad know that it was our last meeting in Canada, we would have to move again it has already been about 2 and a half years of living in Canada, time pasts so fast and I am really going to miss my friends here but, I was used to it. I mean I am already 15 and I have already moved about 4 to 5 times in my life.

The first time I moved was when I was 4 years old then the next time I moved was just after I turned 7 then 9 , after that was 11 then 13 and now 15. Well, I guess the bright side is that I will get a fresh new start for 10th grade, my lucky number.
